Improving the towpath for users
Your Labour Councillors want to improve the usability of the canal towpath between Leeds Dock and Thwaite Mill. Work has now started to map where new benches, bins and cycle hoops can be placed - creating resting stops along this busy and popular route. Work with a student project to identify sites for additional public art along the canal has also started.Return to contents
Coronavirus Support
Over the last year your Labour Councillors have provided over £24,000 of funding to local projects to support our community. This is on top of £30,000 provided by the Labour Council to our local pandemic food hub, The Involve Centre.City Vaccination Success
Labour Leeds City Council’s Public Health Team and the NHS have rolled out the first doses of vaccine at breath-taking speed—protecting the vulnerable. Proof the local public sector get things done—fast.Return to contents
When you get offered the vaccine, get the jab to protect you, your family, your friends and your community. Cllr Liz Nash
Free School Meals
It was your Labour Council which stepped up to provide Free School Meals to children over the holidays until the Government was shamed to do so. They then failed to provide enough food, paying a company £30 a box to provide less food than the Council did for £11.70.Return to contents
Skelton Grange Bridge
Your Labour Councillors are committed to find a solution to make the Skelton Grange Bridge more accessible for cyclists until a new bridge is built as part of HS2. Any solution will cost £100,000s, but we will lobby hard to find the grant funding.Return to contents
Welcome to Hunslet Sign
Your Councillors back a new sign on Church Street as part of local public realm improvements. The public are currently being consulted on their preferred design before Councillors commission the work.Return to contents
The new sign will be great for the area and follow on from the upgraded playground, Community Hub and planned town square. Cllr Paul Wray
Combating bad parking on our streets
The Civic Enforcement Officer paid for by your Labour Councillors is tackling bad parking. From parking on bus stops on Dewsbury Road, blocking bin wagons on Wickham Street or obscuring sightlines on Dock Street—more areas are having parking enforced due to the Councillors determination and belief in fairness.Return to contents
UK Cladding Scandal
Your Councillors and Member of Parliament are dismayed at the Governments failure to offer proper support. Your Labour Council proudly supported a motion demanding more support for victims but the Government has failed to offer adequate support.Return to contents
Hundreds of people living in blocks in the city centre have discovered to their horror that their homes are unsafe because of dangerous cladding, missing fire breaks, wooden balconies and walkways and other problems. Their flats are now worthless, they can’t sell them and they’re having to pay for expensive waking watches and much higher insurance bills while all the time worrying that they are going to be asked for money they simply don’t have to fix the problem. Our leaseholders aren’t responsible for what’s happened; the developers and builders are and they are the people who should be paying to put things right.
I will continue to campaign with the Leeds Cladding Scandal group, our local councillors and all of the leaseholders who have been in touch with me until we get justice for all those affected by this nightmare. Hilary Benn MP
Highways England Update
Following complaints about the Junction 17 roadworks, your Labour Councillors forced Highways England to do the following: to consult on the colour of the Westbury Grove barrier, increase the number of trees they will plant, to agree to an embankment-wide litter pick plan near Hunslet Moor and put forward plans to close off drug dens and rough sleeping spots on their land. We will keep fighting to get a better deal for residents from this agency.Return to contents
Hunslet St Mary's Spire
More intrusive ground checks are needed to assess the land and these are being arranged by with the Diocese. Your Labour Councillors are committed to the Council buying the land to save the spire subject to the land being able to be used.Return to contents
